English and Continental Silver and Silver Plate, with additional sub-departments covering small collectors items and modern design are included in this department which holds silver sales on a quarterly basis
Silver Hallmarks are the world’s oldest form of quality control – in England, they date from 1300, when Edward I ruled that all silver articles should contain a certain level of silver which would then be stamped to prove it with the small mark of a leopard’s head. In 1327, Edward III granted a charter to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, marking the beginning of the company's formal existence. We regularly sell 200-300 lots of silver in each of our quarterly antique and fine art auctions ranging from the Georgian and Victorian periods to 20th century and continental silver.
