Ewbank's Fine Wine And Spirits Auction On May 10
Market Is Strong For Rare Drinks, Sellers Urged To Consign Lots

wine spirits auctionEwbank’s, Surrey’s leading auction house, is preparing for its Fine Wine And Spirits Auction on May 10; the first of two planned for this year.

Chris Ewbank, senior partner and auctioneer, said: “These sales are always incredibly popular, both with specialist collectors, and for those looking for that special gift, or bottle of something to enjoy at home with friends and family.”

Many lots in the most recent sale, held just before Christmas, saw final prices exceeding their estimates, illustrating the strength of demand for rare or unusual drinks.

One of the most intriguing lots consisted of two bottles of 1946 Fine Old Jamaican Rum, formerly belonging to American billionaire, industrialist and Surrey resident Paul Getty, which had a final price of £1,778.

Rum Auction GettyGetty purchased Sutton Place, an impressive Grade I-listed Tudor manor house, just outside Guildford, in 1959, at the time he was deemed to be the world’s richest private citizen. When he died in 1976, Getty is believed to have been worth $6 billion, equivalent to more than $25 billion today.
Getty used Sutton Place as his principal residence, although he is said to have kept a low profile locally, occasionally being spotted driving through the village in a vintage Cadillac Coupé. The rum, was a gift to Getty, who, in turn gifted it to the vendor's parents who worked for him at the time.

One of the most valuable lots sold by Ewbank’s last year, and the auction house record for a bottle of whisky, was a 1967 Bowmore Islay Single Malt Whisky, of cask strength in a presentation box, which had a final price of £4,826; well beating its estimate.

Other high final prices included a dozen bottles of Graham’s 1977 Vintage Port, in original crate, which sold for £952, almost double its top-end estimate; and ten bottles of 1961 Charles Heidsieck Royal Champagne which went for £2,032, beating the guide price of between £800 and £1,200.

From the same estate, were four bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild red wine, all 1948 vintage, with a final price of £762.

Whiskey AuctionAmong lots already consigned for sale for the May 10 auction is a bottle of Louis XIII Remy Martin Grande Champagne cognac. It comes with a glass fleur-de-lis stopper and booklet, and carries a pre-sale guide price of between £600 and £1,000.

Ewbank’s is accepting consignments for the Fine Wine And Spirits sale until May 3.

The team is also accepting entires for the next Fine Sale in June, as well as for forthcoming Garden Furniture, Toys & Models, and Entertainment Memorabilia auctions in May.

The team at Ewbank’s is available for free valuations from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday at the Burnt Common Auction Rooms, just off the A3 near Guildford.
