silver auction surreyEwbank’s, Surrey’s leading auctionhouse, has a number of intriguing pieces of silverware consigned for sale for its ‘Jewellery, Watches and Silver’ auction at the end of November, including a backscratcher, curling tongs and a cigar cutter.

 

Auctioneer Andrew Delve, said: “This is a great time of year to start looking for unusual Christmas presents in the auction room, and our jewellery sales are always popular for this. However, it’s always worth looking for something a little bit quirky - as well as the earrings, necklaces and watches on sale - and some of the silverware lots in the forthcoming sale should fit the bill nicely!”

 

An unusual silver cigar cutter, modelled as a guillotine with moveable blade and basket, by renowned British silversmith Theo Fennell, has a pre-sale guide price of between £800 and £1,200. The cigar cutter would have sold for around £2,000 when it was made in 1994. It measures 15cm high and weighs 519g.silver game bird

 

Fennell is known for his fine jewellery, as well as a broad range of novelty silverware, ranging from yoyos to Marmite lids to decanters. After art school, Fennell began his career at a family-run silversmiths before branching out to his own studio in Hatton Garden. In 1982 the business moved to Fulham, where he works in his workshop today, above the flagship store on Fulham Road. Fennell’s website says: “Our silverware range is for those with an appreciation of fine craftsmanship and a sense of history and humour.”

 

A 38cm-long silver back-scratcher, with turned ebony handle and a silver hand on the end, has been valued at between £100 and £150. It bears maker’s mark ‘WW’ and was assayed in London in 2000. Silver Auctioneers Sussex
 


If you’re looking for a silver gift with a little more history, then an Edward VII silver-case curling tongs set, might whet your appetite. Valued at between £80 and £120, it has silver-handled tongs, and integral rest with double wicks and paraffin reservoir and cover. It was made by A & J Zimmerman Ltd., Birmingham, 1902, and measures 17cm wide.

 

Alternatively, a Victorian silver manicure set, in silver-mounted, glass-covered case, might be of interest. Assayed by Aldwinckle & Slater, London, circa 1885/6, it carries an estimate of between £200 and £300.

 

Add some glamour to any dining table with a set of twelve Mexican sterling silver dinner plates. Each is marked Mexico 925, and the total silver weight is 4,716g. The set carries an estimate of between £1,500 and £2,500.

 

A Dutch silver table ornament by German sculptor Berthold Muller (1893-1979) has been valued at between £500 and £800. It carries London import marks for 1910, and weighs 491g,  standing 20cm high. Muller created many silver animal sculptures, many of which were also kitchen or dining implements such as cruet sets or tea caddies.jewellery silver auction surrey

 

The Jewellery, Watches and Silver auction will begin at 10am on Wednesday 29 November. Viewing for the sale will be Saturday 25 November: 10-2pm; Monday 27 November: 9am-5pm; Tuesday 28 November: 9am-7pm; and on the morning of sale.
